Summary: | The exo-electron glow curves for oxide surfaces on Cu, Zn and their alloys were measured with a new device utilizing a modified GM counter to measure the thermostimulated exoelectron emission (TSEE). It was seen the the glow curve of Cu varied with lapse of time after abrasion; the flow curve changed gradually with time, and finally showed two principal peaks characterizing the cuprous oxide. Measurements of TSEE with repetition of heating and cooling were carried out with Cu, Zn and their alloys. It was found that the emission in Zn was completely different from that of Cu. The emission could hardly be observed from the Zn surface after one heating. These results are discussed from the point of view of the oxidation process. Results quite similar to that for Zn were obtained from the CuZn alloy system irrespective of Zn content. These results are explained as being caused by the formation of a thin ZnO film covering the surface. |
