Summary:Absorption and emission spectroscopy were used to investigate the optical properties of KZnF3:Co(2+) in the visible and infrared spectral region. This system was found to be suitable for laser action between the lowest phonon sidebands. CW laser action of more than 20 mW was observed at 1.95 microns when pumped by an Ar(+) laser at 514 microns and 1.5 W. The system is tunable between 2.05 and 1.85 microns
