Summary: | The products of coals oxidized with 40% aqueous nitric acid at 60 °C include a homologous series of linear aliphatic diacids starting with succinic acid (C
4). These diacids are stable under the conditions of oxidation so that their amounts and lengths measure the amounts and lengths of the saturated components of linear aliphatic chains in the coals. In one coal (PSOC-155) they account for 38% of the carbon and members of the series up to C
23 were detected. Evidence is presented indicating that these chains are integral parts of the coal structure and not interspersed contaminants. |
