Description
Summary:The exposure of a satellite to radiation from a nuclear burst is considered, taking into account the generation of electrical energy which can couple to satellite electric systems. Of the various sources of energy, the power system solar array generates by far the largest amount of energy. It is imperative that satellites must be protected against threats related to the transmission of this energy to the electric system. Attention is given to an approach for developing a program to determine the X-ray response of satellite power systems. As an example, a modeling and testing program that was implemented for the SGEMP Test and Research Satellite (Starsat) is discussed. It is found that in many instances no directly relevant measurement is possible and analysis must be relied on exclusively.
