Summary: | [...]capacity assessments are often conceptualized as a psychiatric topic and thus may be missing from general medical training. [...]to ensure that the ethical standards of informed consent are being upheld, it is important that all physicians are capable of assessing patients’ decision-making capacity. Implementation Curriculum Prior to implementation of this session, there was no formal educational didactic dedicated to capacity assessments for internal medicine residents. [...]this course introduced the concept of decision-making capacity, guided residents through the essential features of a capacity assessment, provided case examples, and allowed time for questions and discussion. Since this session became part of the existing educational structure, there was no additional advertisement or incentive to attend. |
