The influence of stress on the early stages of void formation in a model stainless steel

Description
Summary:A simulation method suitable for investigating the effect of stress on irradiation-induced void formation is described. The technique employs irradiation of uniaxially stressed foil specimens with 6 MeV deuterons from a small cyclotron. First results for a high purity stainless steel at 550°C show a strong influence of tensile stress on the incubation dose and possibly also on the void nucleation rate. They are qualitatively discussed in the light of proposed theoretical models.
