Summary: | Various types of maraging Ni-alloyed stainless steel were subjected to prolonged corrosion tests in a sodium chloride solution and resulting exoion emissions were studied. Both the behavior of the emission intensity versus time and the glow curve of thermostimulated (negative) ion emission were found to vary remarkably for the specimens which differed in the concentration of retained austenite. With the aid of Auger electron spectroscopy, oxide layers of the specimen surfaces were analyzed for a depth of up to about 700 Ă…. It was concluded that oxygen which penetrates into the surface oxide or an hydroxide film in the form of either O

might be responsible for the activity of exoion emission from various types of steel subjected to corrosion tests. |
