Effect of impurities and air exposure on hydrogen absorbing properties of MgNi alloys
The effects of impurities, especially CO 2, and exposure to air on the hydrogen absorbing behaviour of Mg-5wt.%Ni, Mg-10wt.%Ni and Mg 2Ni are studied. Treatment with pure N 2 and CO 2 at room temperature and hydrogenation using H 2N 2 and H 2-CH 4 mixtures does not affect the reactivity of Mg 2Ni....

Summary: | The effects of impurities, especially CO
2, and exposure to air on the hydrogen absorbing behaviour of Mg-5wt.%Ni, Mg-10wt.%Ni and Mg
2Ni are studied. Treatment with pure N
2 and CO
2 at room temperature and hydrogenation using H
2N
2 and H
2-CH
4 mixtures does not affect the reactivity of Mg
2Ni. When hydrogen with 1% CO
2 is used for hydriding Mg
2Ni and Mg-5wt.%Ni in a batch type reactor, the hydrogen capacity of Mg
2Ni is not changed while hydrogen is not fully desorbed from Mg-5wt.%Ni. In the case of Mg-5wt.%Ni H
2O formed from CO
2 and H
2 is considered to hinder desorption of hydrogen from the hydride. Exposure of hydrided and dehydrided samples to the air shows a slight effect on hydrogen capacity of those alloys. |
