Effect of impurities and air exposure on hydrogen absorbing properties of MgNi alloys

The effects of impurities, especially CO 2, and exposure to air on the hydrogen absorbing behaviour of Mg-5wt.%Ni, Mg-10wt.%Ni and Mg 2Ni are studied. Treatment with pure N 2 and CO 2 at room temperature and hydrogenation using H 2N 2 and H 2-CH 4 mixtures does not affect the reactivity of Mg 2Ni....

Description
Summary:The effects of impurities, especially CO 2, and exposure to air on the hydrogen absorbing behaviour of Mg-5wt.%Ni, Mg-10wt.%Ni and Mg 2Ni are studied. Treatment with pure N 2 and CO 2 at room temperature and hydrogenation using H 2N 2 and H 2-CH 4 mixtures does not affect the reactivity of Mg 2Ni. When hydrogen with 1% CO 2 is used for hydriding Mg 2Ni and Mg-5wt.%Ni in a batch type reactor, the hydrogen capacity of Mg 2Ni is not changed while hydrogen is not fully desorbed from Mg-5wt.%Ni. In the case of Mg-5wt.%Ni H 2O formed from CO 2 and H 2 is considered to hinder desorption of hydrogen from the hydride. Exposure of hydrided and dehydrided samples to the air shows a slight effect on hydrogen capacity of those alloys.
