Summary: | A sensitive, precise technique was developed for determination of La in nuclear fuel samples by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. Interference from Ba was suppressed by measurement of LaO exp + at low filament temperature and by elimination of filament loading reagents. Nanogram quantities of La were used for analysis; the overall precision for fuel samples was 0.2%. Good agreement (0.5%) was observed between results obtained by this technique and those obtained by HPLC on a series of samples. Significant change in isotopic fractionation was not observed during the first 3 h of analysis. The sensitivity of the observed isotope ratio to filament temperature was studied, and the optimal range for measurement was 1200-1230 deg C. 12 ref.--AA |
