Change of tetragonal ZrO2 content in ZrO2-toughened Al2O3 by hot isostatic pressing
Two methods are assessed for the preparation of sintered ZrO2-toughened Al2O3 (ZTA) ceramics: the ball-milling of commercial Al2O3 powder and chemical vapor-deposited ZrO2 powder in ethanol, followed by drying, isostatic pressing and sintering at 1600 C for one hour; and the preparation of a chemica...

Summary: | Two methods are assessed for the preparation of sintered ZrO2-toughened Al2O3 (ZTA) ceramics: the ball-milling of commercial Al2O3 powder and chemical vapor-deposited ZrO2 powder in ethanol, followed by drying, isostatic pressing and sintering at 1600 C for one hour; and the preparation of a chemical vapor codeposited Al2O3-ZrO2 powder by feeding a vapor mixture of AlCl3 and ZrCl4 into an H2/O2 flame, followed by water washing, drying, ball milling in ethanol, redrying, isostatic pressing, and sintering at 1600 C for one hour. Microstructures were observed by SEM. It is found that tetragonal ZrO2 particles become more resistant to stress-induced transformation with hot isostatic pressing, and it is suggested that a residual tensile stress occasionally remains on the hot isostatic pressed surfaces of ZTA ceramics. |
