Determination of Oxygen in the Production of Nitrides by Means of Neutron Activation

Description
Summary:A procedure is described for the determination of oxygen impurities in ultradisperse and dense samples of Ti, Al, Nb, boron and Si nitrides using the nuclear reaction exp 16 O(n,p) exp 16 N. The samples are placed in a sealed Ti dish and irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons produced in a neutron generator. The activity of the exp 16 N produced is measured by 4-8 MeV gamma emission in a scintillation gamma spectrometer. The oxygen content to be determined was from n x 10 exp --1 mass% to n x 10 mass% with a relative standard deviation of 10 and 2%, respectively. The results of the nitride analysis are presented. 9 ref.--AA
