Description
Summary:This paper is largely collative in nature. Firstly, the importance of grain-oriented electrotechnical steels as a class of strategic material is emphasized. Then, the evolution of the production metallurgy of some of the stages in the preparation of grain-oriented material is described with emphasis on the scale on which critical operations are carried out in practice. Likewise, some aspects of magnetic domain behavior are noted and then the development of stress imparted by coatings is placed in context. Next, the operation of this three-component system is considered in terms of some recent studies by the author on magnetostriction as this phenomenon clearly illustrates the relationship between the metallurgical structure, the domain structure and stress. In conclusion, some comments are made on materials prepared by the rapidly cooled technique.
