Summary: | The condition of damaged material samples from the Solar Max satellite, namely a kapton/dacron/aluminized mylar protective blanket, a piece of silver-coated teflon shielded from the sun, and another such piece of teflon that had been exposed to solar radiation, has been studied in order to infer the erosiveness of the near-space environment. Surface damage caused by high energy molecular species, submicronic micrometeorite impacts, and low energy oxygen atom erosion are discussed in light of laboratory analyses of the materials after their subjection to simulations of these processes.
