Summary: | Hydration and conformation of poly(methacrylic acid) in D
2O (
c = 0.036 g cm
−3), neutralized by NaOD or LiOD, was studied by combination of neutron and X-ray small-angle scattering in the whole range of the degree of neutralization, α. Differences in the radii of gyration of polyion cross-section determined from the X-ray and neutron data indicate the existence of a monomolecular hydration shell, the density of which for
α = 1 is about 10% higher than that of bulk water. Condensation of counterions on the polymer chain, increasing with α, has been proved. Persistence length is about 8 Å for
α ⩽ 0.2, increases up to 12 Å for
α ⋍ 0.2–0.5 and then remains constant. |
