Description
Summary:Field survey was conducted to evaluate the major factors which control dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in water bodies at Lake Yunoko (0.33 km 2) and Lake Kamafusa (2.66 km 2). Seasonally measured DO profiles resulted from phenomena such as oxygen production by photosynthesis, oxygen consumption by respiration and/or sediment oxygen demand were also presented. A mathematical model for calculating DO concentration in the lakes was developed. Major factors to control hypolimnetic oxygen depletion were calculated. As the results of calculation, it was demonstrated that the largest depletion in DO at the bottom layer was caused mainly by the sediment oxygen demand on the oxygen budget at Lake Yunoko in early summer. However, after DO depletion in the hypolymnion, water column oxygen demand became to a dominant factor to control vertical DO profiles.
