Pulsed Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Measurements of Korringa Relaxation in ZrV sub 2 H sub x and HfV sub 2 H sub x Hydrides

The temp. dependence of the proton spin--lattice relaxation rate 1 /T sub 1 in HfV sub 2 H sub x and ZrV sub 2 H sub x (1 < = x < = 4) was measured in the temp. range 77-450K at several frequencies. In some cases, 1/T sub 1 was also measured in the range 2-77K at 51.95 MHz. Thus, in HfV sub 2...

Description
Summary:The temp. dependence of the proton spin--lattice relaxation rate 1 /T sub 1 in HfV sub 2 H sub x and ZrV sub 2 H sub x (1 < = x < = 4) was measured in the temp. range 77-450K at several frequencies. In some cases, 1/T sub 1 was also measured in the range 2-77K at 51.95 MHz. Thus, in HfV sub 2 H sub 3.5 , 1/T sub 1 is linear in T from 2-150K with a slope of 0.011 s exp --1 K exp --1 . In ZrV sub 2 H sub x (x = 3.5, 4), 1/T sub 1 is linear in T from 77-180K, but the slope is 0.019 s exp --1 K exp --1 . In ZrV sub 2 H sub 3 the slope changes from 0.008 plus/minus 0.004 s exp --1 K exp --1 < 45K to 0.19 s exp --1 K exp --1 > 65K. At lower hydrogen concentrations the upper bounds on the Korringa relaxation rate 1 /T sub 1e indicate a lower slope. These results are briefly discussed in relation to band structure calculations for ZrV sub 2 , other measured properties of the ZrV sub 2 H sub x and HfV sub 2 H sub x systems and the electronic structure of the transition metal hydrides.--AA
