Summary:The CO2 laser with modulated losses or frequency exhibits a period-doubling cascade culminating in chaos. This system is shown to converge towards various attractors and phenomena related to the coexistence and interaction of the attractors, and in particular, generalized bistability and crisis have been observed. The numerical simulation based on a very simplified model of the CO2 laser reproduces well most of the experimental results. (Author)
