Description
Summary:Previously abstracted from original as item 8412-3.3-0335Y. The structural changes occurring in Al--Si melts modified with Na and phosphorus have been investigated by analyzing the effect of the modifiers on the structure and properties of pure Al. It is found that both Na and P have little effect on the solidification of Al and therefore the changes in the solidification of Al--Si alloys (25% Si) modified with Na or P are due to changes in the interaction between Al and Si rather than to the interaction between Al atoms. The results make it possible to explain the mechanism of the modification of eutectic Al--Si alloys with Na and hypereutectic Al--Si alloys with P from the standpoint of general solidification theory without resorting to special hypothesis. 10 ref.--X-ref.(US).
