Effect of R ratio and ΔK level on the hysteretic energy dissipated during fatigue crack propagation

The evolution of U, the cyclic work to produce a unit area of fatigue crack, with respect to the R ratio and the Delta K level has been measured for a 2024-T351 Al alloy. The value of U reaches a constant minimum level for Delta K values greater than a critical level, Delta K sub cr . Delta K sub cr...

Description
Summary:The evolution of U, the cyclic work to produce a unit area of fatigue crack, with respect to the R ratio and the Delta K level has been measured for a 2024-T351 Al alloy. The value of U reaches a constant minimum level for Delta K values greater than a critical level, Delta K sub cr . Delta K sub cr decreased as R increased. The value of U decreased for Delta K < Delta K sub cr . There is some mechanical energy loss at low R due to crack surface contact. 12 ref.--D.O.N.
