Description
Summary:Previously abstracted from original as item 8709-4.5-0429Y. The thermodynamical calculations of interaction of 1420 Al alloy components with the atmosphere of heating furnace, the structure and phase composition of the surface layer on the 1420 alloy sheets and conditions of pore formation during TIG (GTA) welding have been investigated. The surface layer consisted of LiO2, LiOH, Li2CO3 and spinel on the Al and magnesium oxide base. The thickness of surface layer depends on the deformation temperature and rapidly increases at temperatures > 400 deg C. The gaseous phase of pores consisted mainly of CH4, CO2, H2O and hydrogen. To obtain the pore-free weld joints, the removal of 0.25 and 0.05 mm surface layers at, respectively, < = 450 and < 400 deg C heating temperatures was recommended. 7 ref.--X-ref.(UK/US).
