Summary:[...]the findings are not entirely new.4 The real novelty of the study lies in the important results obtained when lifestyle factors were considered in the statistical model.3 After taking into account different healthy lifestyle factors, including not smoking, never consuming alcohol, the low consumption of preserved foods, and the frequent intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, the adoption of two or more of these healthy lifestyle factors significantly lowered the risk of incident gastric cancer compared with those who adopted one or none of these lifestyle factors, regardless of genetic risk. In a sense, the study design is even more intriguing than the results because the observation that several healthy lifestyle factors affect the risk of incident gastric cancer (ie, the higher the number of healthy lifestyle factors adopted, the lower the incidence of cancer) supports the multifactorial aetiopathogenesis of gastric epithelial malignancies.5 The results also imply that strategies to prevent primary gastric cancer could be adjusted depending on an individual's degree of exposure to environmental factors (ie, whether they have a favourable or an unfavourable lifestyle).
