Summary: | A research program leading to the development of a design for a permanent manned lunar base is described. Attention is given to the advantages offered by the lunar environment for materials processing and scientific investigations, due to the absence of an atmosphere and the plentiful supply of certain materials (iron and titanium). It is shown that once a controlled environment capsule is placed on the lunar surface, work could begin toward the construction of a permanent facility using lunar materials. It is pointed out that the research effort required for the design of a lunar base could perform concurrently with the R&D for the Space Station, resulting in the emplacement of a controlled environment capsule by the year 2007. |
