Summary: | Given the relative rare nature of MMP and the lack of literature specific to anorectal involvement, there may be a deficit of awareness in the medical community as well. [...]this case report is an opportunity for clinicians to highlight anorectal symptoms and treatment options for patients with a known diagnosis of pemphigoid to minimize morbidity. Additionally, a serum specimen for indirect immunofluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect circulating basement membrane zone antibodies may narrow the differential diagnosis and identify patients with autoantibodies to laminin 332 (previously known as laminin 5 and epiligrin) who are at higher risk for malignancy. 2 The primary goals of the treatment of MMP are to halt the progression of the disease, improve symptoms, and prevent adverse sequelae of chronic tissue inflammation and scarring. 2 In 2002, the First International Consensus on MMP, were published providing guidance on medical therapy for MMP. 3 Patients are categorized as high risk (ocular, genital, nasopharyngeal, esophageal, and laryngeal mucosa) or low risk (confined to the oral mucosa or oral mucosa and skin). [...]MMP is a chronic, blistering disease of the skin and mucous membranes. |
