Effect of yttrium additions on the oxidation of nickel
The oxidation of Ni, Ni--0.1Y, and Ni--0.3Y alloys was carried out in the temp. range 500-900 deg C at p sub O2 = 1 atm. Summary: | The oxidation of Ni, Ni--0.1Y, and Ni--0.3Y alloys was carried out in the temp. range 500-900 deg C at p sub O2 = 1 atm. Measurements of the oxide scale thickness and the oxide grain size as a function of time are reported. The addition of yttrium to Ni increases the oxidation rate at 500 and 600 deg C, but decreases it at 700-900 deg C. A model which relates short circuit diffusion and grain growth in the scale to the oxidation process is used and extended. The agreement between the measured values of the grain size and the oxidation rate constant and those calculated from the model is good for Ni and Ni--0.1%Y oxidation and fair for the case of Ni--0.3%Y. In the temp. range of the experiments, it is found that the diffusion of Ni along the grain boundaries in the oxide scale controls the rate of oxidation and that the oxidation kinetics are not parabolic except for Ni at 500 deg C. 27 ref.--AA |
