Summary: | Despite robust pre-disaster planning and an early activation of the hospital's incident command center, the 246- page emergency preparedness plan offered no guidance for such a situation, and staff were left with little support in dealing with an unprecedented disaster [8]. While geological events of such scale will always be problematic, the potential failure of the scientific community tasked with tsunami risk reduction to imagine and prevent a worst-case scenario tsunami was raised [10]. The establishment of counter-terrorism medicine as a subspecialty aims to include roundtable discussions between healthcare, security, counter-terrorism and other emergency response agencies to address these escalating issues. |
