Summary: | Rust, the final product of the corrosion of iron, has been well-known to human beings since the most distant ages. This is the subject of detailed literature coverage. Less reliable on the other hand is knowledge about the first use of the term "corrosion" for the description of the process of corrosion. As far as can be ascertained, the word "corroded" was first published in the year 1667 in a description of a voyage to the Caribbean-Islands in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and in 1669 in the same journal, and the word "corrosion" was probably first used for designating the corrosion of a metal by the strong action of mineral waters of an English medical well upon silver coins. In the year 1678 the Philosophical Transactions then first described a case of amelioration of a construction material in a salt-pit, based on previous tests in plant. The first use of corrosion terms in various countries is described. 44 ref.--AA |
