A Study of Precipitation in Ti--3 wt.% Cu and Ti--3 wt.% Cu--5 wt.% Al Alloys by TEM and Atom Probe

This investigation shows that Ti--Cu alloys can be age-hardened by the precipitation of a Cu enriched zone in the alpha -phase forming platelets on (101) planes of the matrix. The average composition of the precipitates obtained by atom-probe analyses is 30 plus/minus 10 at.%. The thickness of the p...

Description
Summary:This investigation shows that Ti--Cu alloys can be age-hardened by the precipitation of a Cu enriched zone in the alpha -phase forming platelets on (101) planes of the matrix. The average composition of the precipitates obtained by atom-probe analyses is 30 plus/minus 10 at.%. The thickness of the platelets is approx 1.0 nm. The results suggest an alternating structure of Cu rich--Ti rich layers for the platelets. The addition of Al gives rise to a significant solid solution strengthening of the alpha -phase. It reduces the kinetics of precipitation and does not alter the morphology of the platelets. Atom probe analyses reveal an Al depletion in the platelets, indicating that this element does not contribute to precipitation hardening. 8 ref.--H.K.M.
