Description
Summary:The change in the eccentricity of the orbit of an artificial earth satellite (AES) as a result of one passage through the moon's shadow is estimated. The shadow is assumed to be of cylindrical shape. For the AES 1963-30D, a perturbation in the heights of perigee and apogee of the orbit of 31.26 m is found, compared to 115.38 m for passage through the earth's shadow. This change cannot be neglected if an accurate computation of the orbit is needed and the satellite has sufficiently large area to mass ratio. (C.D.)
