Summary: | The Pd-B and Pd-B-C liquid phases were studied by the Knudsen effusion technique to determine the variation of palladium and boron activity with composition and temperature. Equations are given which describe the thermodynamic properties throughout the liquid phase region. In addition, the phase boundary composition was determined between the liquid and the respective multiphase containing excess boron. The phase forms solid boron at 1600 K when the composition reaches Pd
0.55B
0.45 and the palladium activity is 0.0186. Dissolved carbon causes the palladium activity to increase and the phase boundary to shift to a higher boron composition. |
