Description
Summary:The Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) method, is useful for the observation of phase gradients in objects which have phase variations of less than one quarter of a wavelength. In this paper a description of an optical system in which the DIC method is realised through the use of a Murty-type shearing interferometer consisting of a plane parallel glass plate is given. This is then followed by a description of a modified version of this system, in which a holographic element is used to both compensate for lens aberrations, and also to modulate the output fringes in order to allow their easy detection. The application of this system to the measurement of film thickness is described, and results given which are in reasonably good agreement with measurements made on a Talysurf.
