Summary: | This paper examines three methods for making composite wires and coils from YBa2Cu3O(7-delta): a powder-in-tube method for fabricating metal-clad composites, a powder-coating method for metal-core composites, and a molten ceramic processing for bare wires. The effects of various processing steps on the structure and superconducting properties of these wires, such as transition temperature and critical current density, are discussed. The feasibility of making wires from this brittle ceramic superconductor is demonstrated, and the engineering problems in wire and coil fabrication that need yet to be addressed are discussed.
