Martensite decomposition in aged nickel steel

Description
Summary:The phenomenon of tempering of martensite formed in an aged austenite is studied. The results of such a study may prove useful in developing novel steel treatment technologies, including various preliminary actions on austenite. Selected as the object of the study was steel Fe--23.5Ni--0.50C where, depending on austenite ageing conditions, the formation of martensite crystals was observed with different lattice parameters and substantially differing kinetics, without much change in the completeness of transformation. It was of interest to conduct a comparative study of the rate of decomposition of martensite formed, in one case, by burst kinetics and featuring an anomalously high tetragonality of the lattice and, in another case, by ordinary athermal (non-burst) kinetics, having a lattice tetragonality close to the normal one. 7 ref.--AA
