Summary: | Open column chromatography, using short columns requiring only 10 min for a complete separation, and acid/base extraction were used to isolate and classify polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocyclic compounds (PANH). One fraction containing secondary polycyclic aromatic amines and two fractions containing tertiary polycyclic aromatic amines, according to the accessibility of the nitrogen atom, were obtained. Using this procedure, it was possible to overcome the problem of incomplete separation between secondary PANH and shielded tertiary PANH usually encountered with liquid chromatography. Yields for separation on silica, alumina and with acid/base extraction are presented. Primary aromatic amines are not recovered quantitatively. The overall method has been applied to a solvent-refined coal sample. |
