Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Y sub 2 Ba sub 3 Cu sub 2 PtO sub 10

The composition and crystal structure of a "green phase" present as impurity in YBCO samples prepared in Pt crucibles is described. The phase derives from attack of Pt crucible during the chemical reaction. Y sub 2 Ba sub 3 Cu sub 2 PtO sub 10 is monoclinic (space group C 2/m) with a = 12....

Description
Summary:The composition and crystal structure of a "green phase" present as impurity in YBCO samples prepared in Pt crucibles is described. The phase derives from attack of Pt crucible during the chemical reaction. Y sub 2 Ba sub 3 Cu sub 2 PtO sub 10 is monoclinic (space group C 2/m) with a = 12.518(2), b = 5.828(1), c = 7.362(1) A and beta = 105.44(2) deg . The structure was refined from 321 unique observed reflections to R = 0.048. Even if the lattice differs from that of the well known "green phase" Y sub 2 BaCuO sub 5 , a correlation exists between the two phases showing similar lattice constants. Single crystals of this phase were obtained in growth experiments of YBCO crystals by HTSG from CuO--BaO fluxes in crucibles. 8 ref.--AA
