Summary: | We report the synthesis of nickel aluminides by mechanical alloying (MA) of mixtures of elemental nickel and aluminium powders. To the best of our knowledge this is the first synthesis of these compounds by mechanical alloying. The major end product was disordered NiAl which was identified by X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis. Results are reported on the solid state transformation of Ni
2Al
3 to disordered NiAl during MA. An increased solubility has been observed in the Ni-Al system, where MA can produce a fcc phase Ni
66Al
34 (the thermal solubility of Al in Ni is less than 3.85 at% at 773 K). In the two-phase region of the phase diagram the amorphization of Ni-Al was observed. |
