Summary: | A new method of measuring total elongation at fracture at ultra-high strain rate by laser-induced shock waves is presented. In the study of spall strength and spall development, a novel method, which allows measurement of the total elongation at fracture for strain rates as high as 10 exp 7 s exp --1 , is developed. For pure Fe, the total elongation at fracture was found to be 7.8% at a strain rate of 10 exp 7 s exp --1 , as compared to an elongation of 18.5% in quasistatic conditions. 8 ref.--A.R. |
