Description
Summary:The initial electron density in x-ray preionized avalanche discharge lasers has been studied extensively. A computer model has been developed to calculate this initial electron density taking into account the characteristics of the x-ray source, x-ray physics, and geometric effects. Results of these calculations were verified for various experimental conditions using an ionization chamber. The experimental data are in excellent agreement with the calculations. Results from this work may be directly applied in the design of x-ray preionized gas lasers.
