Description
Summary:Cristobalite is a silica polymorph that forms in Pyrex under certain conditions. The effects of processing conditions on the cristobalite content are studied to determine means to prevent its formation. Cristobalite causes microfissures in Pyrex and will cause it to fracture under relatively light loading. Samples were fabricated from ball-milled pyrex and hot pressed at 1-20 MPa at temperatures from 750-950 deg C for 30 s. Cristobalite increased with temperature and/or pressure to a maximum of 59 vol.% at 950 deg C and 20 MPa; it seems to nucleate at silica-rich regions.
