Description
Summary:The chemistry, morphology and properties of polyurethane (PUR) elastomers are reviewed. The advantage of PUR elastomers is said to be related to their high hardness for a given modulus, high abrasion and chemical resistance, excellent mechanical and elastic properties, blood and tissue compatibility and a number of other specific properties. Another important factor is said to be the possibility of custom tailoring the structure by varying the type and the ratio of starting components during processing. The mechanical properties are correlated with the structure of segmented polyurethanes. General relationships are discussed and applied to this class of polymers. The emphasis in the discussion is put on the dependence of molecular mechanisms of deformation and tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and relaxation properties on structure.
