Description
Summary:Experimental determination of phase behavior within the Pu-Mg binary system has been completed using metallography, electron microprobe, X-ray powder diffraction, and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Decompositional temperatures and lattice parameters were determined for two intermetallic phases, PuMg 4 and PuMg 6. Additionally, solid and liquid solubilities were characterized from 510 to 1095°C. A new construction of the binary phase diagram is presented which reflects our data along with the work of previous researchers. Thermodynamic properties for the liquid phase were derived from the revised phase boundary of the liquid miscibility gap determined in this investigation.
