The prediction and synthesis of some new intermetallic compounds between transition metals and rare earth metals

Based on computerized pattern recognition of chemical bond parameters, a predictive list of unknown compounds of various crystal-type has been prepared. Some new rare earth-transition metal compounds with AB 2, AB 3 and AB 5 structures have been synthesized. They are EuFe 2, EuNi 2, NdIr 3, GdIr 3,...

Description
Summary:Based on computerized pattern recognition of chemical bond parameters, a predictive list of unknown compounds of various crystal-type has been prepared. Some new rare earth-transition metal compounds with AB 2, AB 3 and AB 5 structures have been synthesized. They are EuFe 2, EuNi 2, NdIr 3, GdIr 3, DyIr 3 and LaPd 5. The X-ray diffraction data and their indexing indicate that EuFe 2 is of MgZn 2 structure, EuNi 2 is of MgNi 2 structure, MdIr 3, GdIr 3 and DyIr 3 are of AuCu 3 structure, and LaPd 5 is of CaCu 5 structure. The crystal structures of these compounds are in agreement with the computerized prediction. These experimental results show again that the predictions based on computerized pattern recognition of chemical bond parameters is quite reliable and can be used as a guide for the preparation of new intermetallic compounds.
