Summary: | In a conventional generator design, the effect of the end region is a small perturbation of the total field, and so a two-dimensional finite element analysis, with correction factors for the end effects, is sufficient for predicting performance. In contrast, the end region of a compact, high power-density generator has a large effect on performance because of the generator's relatively short stack length. While a full three-dimensional analysis of the generator is possible, the high engineering and computational costs of three-dimensional model preparation and solution lead us to seek an alternative more suitable for routine design studies. |
