Blends of poly(styrene-stat-acrylonitrile) and poly(butadiene-stat-acrylonitrile): a guide to the butadiene-acrylonitrile segmental interaction
A range of butadiene--acrylonitrile and of styrene--acrylonitrile statistical copolymers have been synthesized and blended to establish a value for the segmental interaction energy density between butadiene and acrylonitrile. Two series of blends were examined. In the first series, "internal&qu...

Summary: | A range of butadiene--acrylonitrile and of styrene--acrylonitrile statistical copolymers have been synthesized and blended to establish a value for the segmental interaction energy density between butadiene and acrylonitrile. Two series of blends were examined. In the first series, "internal" blends from butadiene--acrylonitrile copolymers of different composition were found to be miscible only when the compositions differed by < approx 4 vol.%. In contrast, blends of butadiene--acrylonitrile copolymers with styrene--acrylonitrile copolymers formed a fairly extensive miscibility region which was analyzed by considering this to form part of a conic section in composition space. A value for the butadiene--acrylonitrile segmental interaction energy density B sub B--AN of 33-37 J cm exp --3 appropriately describes the phase behavior in this system. |
