Characterization of cellulose/aromatic nylon blends prepared from mmno solutions

A procedure is proposed for the preparation of blends of cellulose with poly( n-methylene isophthalamides) (abbreviated as nylons nI) in N-methyl morpholine N-oxide (MMNO). Nylons nI blends with n = 3–7 were characterized by DSC and found to be immiscible at all concentrations. Reprecipitation from...

Description
Summary:A procedure is proposed for the preparation of blends of cellulose with poly( n-methylene isophthalamides) (abbreviated as nylons nI) in N-methyl morpholine N-oxide (MMNO). Nylons nI blends with n = 3–7 were characterized by DSC and found to be immiscible at all concentrations. Reprecipitation from MMNO solutions was found to affect considerably the crystallinity of both the pure polymers and the blends. Nylons nI, normally obtained as amorphous materials after precipitation of acidic solutions in water, were found to exhibit good crystallinity. In the blends, X-ray diffraction showed that a minor amount of non-miscible polymer (from 10 to 25%) enhanced crystallinity and perfection of the crystals, attributed to a nucleating effect of the immiscible phase.
