Summary: | The principles of the production of ceramic-matrix composites with fiber reinforcements, the fracture behavior of ceramic composites, and ways of improving the mechanical properties of ceramic composites are discussed. In particular, attention is given to the production of fibers in the systems Si--C--O, Si--C--N--O, Si--N--O, and Si--Ti--C--O. The synthesis of heterogeneous composite structures is examined as the principal method of achieving high fracture toughness, a parameter that is essential for the performance and reliability of structural ceramics. Some applications of ceramic composites are briefly reviewed. |
