Summary: | A laboratory study has been carried out to develop engineering steel grades with optimized machinability and forgeability for precision forging applications. Increased sulphur levels (up to 0.15%) may be tolerable in a range of engineering steel types to improve machinability without seriously impairing forgeability, especially in conjunction with sulphide shape modifying additives such as calcium or tellurium. Alternatively, for certain grades, boron or lead additions could have a similar beneficial effect. For some applications, the use of bright drawn bar may be preferable to turned bar. |
