Summary: | The role of adhesion in rubber modified polymers was determined using finite element stress analysis. Adhesion between the two phases was found to be unimportant in terms of the stress concentrations in the matrix phase, even near the polymer/rubber interface. By considering zero adhesion and perfect adhesion limits, bounds on the interfacial behavior have been established. The stress analysis predicts elastic properties such as modulus, Poisson's ratio and yield strength. A comparison is made to experimental results on a thermoplastic/elastomer blend of Ultem with Viton. |
