Summary: | Chromium films (from the submonolayer range to approx 5 monolayers (ML)) have been evaporated in an UHV chamber onto clean Ag(100) kept at room temperature (rt) and analysed by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARUPS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). LEED shows a p(1 x 1) pattern, worsening rapidly > 1 ML. With ARUPS, the evolution of the Cr 3d induced features and Ag(100)M sub 3 surface state have been followed as a function of Cr coverage, in particular in the submonolayer range. The data suggest the nucleation of a large density of poorly ordered small islands because of reduced adatom mobility at rt. Bilayer platelets are already formed in the submonolayer range and the Cr clusters adopt the bcc structure. |
