Description
Summary:Reports a novel type of low-noise receiver for optical communication. The receiver is based on the photoparametric mode of operation, where a photodetector is pumped at microwave frequencies and photodetection and parametric amplification are achieved simultaneously in a single device. Frequency conversion/amplification is also possible to suit particular system applications. The devices used were commercially available photodiodes which are optimized for photodetection. The starting point for the design of a tailor-made diode for the photoparametric mode of operation requires a theoretical study at device level. An attempt is made to address some of the issues involved both at circuit and device levels.< >
