Description
Summary:The influence of Christianity on the Sierra Leone peninsula before 1787 deriving from the Roman Catholic Church and the nations of Iberia is examined. Europeans, mostly Portuguese traders, began exploring the region in the 1460s. The Portuguese influence, which also included bases on the Cape Verde Islands lasted until 1787. However, in the 18th century, after centuries of intermingling with Africans, the rivers of the region were inhabited by Afro-Portuguese who were permanent residents. The Afro-Portuguese considered themselves Christians, and they began to influence the more traditional cultures of their neighboring Africans. This essay presents a chronological sequence of the development of Christian influence in this region.
